#Playlist – 90’s Alternative Rock in Love

thedealis.co.za

This might come as a bit of a shock to some…but I absolutely love rock music.  Especially 90’s alternative rock and some of that eighties glam rock vibe.  When it comes to music it’s a bit of a free-for-all with me.  The most important part of a song is the lyric and intention (for me anyway).  Yes, the beat might be good…but what does the song say?  So many people shoot down rock music so quickly without really listening to the song – these were the folks I grew up with who said it just wasn’t for them because apparently it was music meant for a certain demographic group.

Hogwash.

Music is there for whoever wants to listen to it.  I believe each genre should be given a fair chance before one decides what works best for one’s ears.  I can appreciate the musicality of many different musicians regardless of their chosen genre.  I especially love reading their lyrics before actually listening to the song because, if I’m honest, the poetry is what draws me first…then the melody.  Try it sometime.  You might just learn to appreciate a new genre.

Today I have chosen five of the top alternative rock ballads that, to me, are simply timeless.  Great lyrics and beautiful delivery all around.  Here goes:

No Doubt – “Don’t Speak”

Natalie Imbruglia – “Torn”

Eagle Eye Cherry – “Save Tonight”

The Goo Goo Dolls – “Iris” (a thing of beauty)

The Cranberries – “Linger” (my personal favourite)

These are but five.  What are some of your favourites?  Let me know in the comments.

Have an awesome weekend folks.

  1. The 90’s was the best era for music! I love Nirvana, Alice In Chains, the Deftones, Foo Fighters and way too many others to list

    1. Kurt Cobain was the love of my life at some point. I have a great love for Matchbox 20, The Verve, R.E.M as well. The 90’s was definitely the best era for music 🙂
